The human services, reviewed

Moneypenny

The premium end of the market, and it shows: dedicated PAs, quality control, and the smoothest handling of genuinely complicated calls in the business. If your callers are corporate and your average job is four figures, Moneypenny is the safe answer. The price reflects it. And for a plumber’s “how much to look at my boiler” volume, it is a lot of polish for a simple job.

ReceptionHQ

Reliable, well-run message-taking with 24/7 options and a decent app. Their trade-specific pages (plumbers, electricians) show they understand the vertical. The watch-out is per-call pricing: fine at 20 calls a month, less fine at 150.

Jam

Pay-as-you-go done properly. No monthly minimum to speak of, per-call billing, good quality operators. For a business whose call volume swings wildly month to month, the flexibility is real. The trade-off is the same as all metered human services: every call costs, so every spam call costs you twice.

Answer.co.uk

Small-business focused, friendly, well-priced, and honest about being a message-taking service. A solid budget choice if what you need is “a human takes a message” and nothing more. Diary booking and price quoting are not really their game.

Best Reception

The trade-aware one of the traditional bunch. Dedicated receptionists, a two-week free trial, and genuine trade verticals. Worth a look if you want a human and a trial first. Like all human services, 24/7 cover means premium rates.

The AI alternative

AI answering services answer instantly, 24/7, at a flat price. No per-call metering, no night rate, no setup fee. The honest trade-offs: a young AI service has a voice some callers will notice, and no AI service today should be trusted with a 20-minute technical conversation. For the calls a trades business actually gets (quotes, bookings, emergencies, spam) a good one holds its own against a briefed human PA, at a fraction of the cost.

What Brring specifically does that the others on this page do not: reads your website at setup and quotes your prices on the call, books jobs into your diary, greets repeat callers by name, and texts your mobile within seconds when a caller says “burst pipe”. From £49 a month flat, 7-day trial, no card.

How to choose without wasting a year

  1. Count your calls honestly. A month of missed-call logs beats any guesswork. Under 5 a month: voicemail. 5–50: the per-call maths on our cost page will settle human vs AI fast.
  2. Decide what “handled” means for you. Message only, or quote-and-book? Message-only favours the cheap human services; quote-and-book favours AI (or premium human).
  3. Check the hours that matter. If your missed calls are 6pm–9am, the 24/7 question is the decision. Human night rates vs flat AI pricing.
  4. Trial two, not five. Every service here offers a trial or a month-to-month option. Run your real calls through two of them for a week each and read the transcripts yourself.
